The Story of Arms and Armour was first published in 1971 and was the 17th title in the long-running Achievements series, 601. It was illustrated by the brilliant visual-storyteller Robert Ayton and written by Edmund Hunter.
As is typical of golden-age Ladybird books, it was fine to talk about long-ago battles but there was little taste for discussing 20th century warfare. Only limited reference is made to modern weapons – the focus is on cross-bows, muskets and cannon.
This matt copy dates from the early 1970s and was originally priced at 15p. The cover is in good condition but is peeling head and foot of spine. There’s a name and address on the title page and on the back cover someone has written a price (£6 inc VAT!) The reading pages are in very good condition. With a tally number of 290, I believe it to be a first edition.
