Baby Jesus, 1961 was the first book to be issued in series 606a. (Other bible stories are to be found in an earlier Ladybird series: 522.)
It was written by Hilda Rostron, illustrated by Clive Uptton and was originally issued with a dustjacket. Uptton also produced many similar bible-story illustrations as the main illustrator for Treasure magazine and as a regular contributor to Look and Learn.
The odd spelling to his surname was to avoid confusion with another artist – to distinguish himself, he simply decided to double the ‘t’.
This copy still its original dustwrapper (price-clipped) in generally good condition over plain buff-coloured boards. The DJ has a couple of chips and small closed tears and a hard-to-spot number on the front panel (see photo). There is a book plate on the free endpaper and a couple of residue marks on the front endpapers. The reading pages have a few spots and creases but are generally good and the illustrations glow! This is often the case with early books of this era – beautifully vivid reproduction values.
