Flight six The Holy Land was the 6th and last of the Travel Adventure series, 587, written by David Scott Daniell and boldly illustrated by Jack Matthew. The series featured two children, Alison and John accompanying Daddy on exciting trips around the world. Alison and John are very eager beavers, always keen to research their destination, study maps and learn more about social and geo-political history. So this makes them fascinating reading today – capturing as it does the lingering assumptions of empire, of Commonwealth and of a burgeoning new world order that still places Britain at its centre. The early versions of the book are to be found with dustwrapper. This book steers a careful path through an area of geo-politics that must have been problematic even at the time. The choice of the name ‘Holy Land’ probably reflects this.
This is book still has its original unprice-clipped dustwrapper, in very good condition. There’s a small brown mark at the top of the DJ front panel and a neat name on the endpapers. With no tally number on the DJ flap, I believe this to be a first edition.
