Rapunzel, 1968. This book, illustrated by Eric Winter, was the 14 book in the original series of 27 Well-Loved Tales books. The text, as always in the books of this series, was written by Vera Southgate.
Some odd things linger in the memory for many years after childhood. Many people vividly remember the scene of the wife, craving the crisp salad in the witch’s garden more than they remember the poor blind prince feeling his way around in the wilderness.
Rapunzel, 1971, matt boards, Illustrated by Eric Winter. This is a sad copy – you would only buy this copy if you were desperate to get hold of one for nostalgia reasons and don’t want to spend much. This copy is in poor condition inside and out). There’s a big scuff/ ring mark to the front cover and the spine is very worn. Inside there are light pencil scribbles on the back endpapers. That said, the reading pages – although tired and well-turned – are actually in decent shape. So a decent reading copy – but don’t say I didn’t warn you. It dates from the mid-1970s and has the original price of 24p on the back.
