Red Riding Hood also Goldilocks and the Three Bears, 1957, series 413 was the last book to be published in series 413 – the second series of Ladybird books ever produced. The 413 series is quite a random mixture of tales and rhymes – but all for pre-school children. This book proved to be a forerunner for one of Ladybird’s most successful series ever – it looks extremely similar to the style and format of the later series 606d “Well Loved Tales”, although artist and writer are different. This version was written by Gilda Lund (the only book she wrote for Ladybird) and was illustrated by Harry Wingfield. This was also the first book that Harry every illustrated for Ladybird – but in his case it turned out to be the first of hundreds. He went on to be Ladybird’s most extensively employed illustrator ever and, more than any other artist, it is his style that represents the essential ‘Ladybirdness’ of a Ladybird book. This version took two fairy tales and published them together in one book. In the 1960s, when the Well Loved Tales series was in the planning, it is clear that this book was used as a model for the look and feel of the series. Eventually the two stories (Red Riding Hood and Goldilocks) were re-issued – each in their own book and illustrated by (the also awesome) Eric Winter. So before you buy yourself a copy of Red Riding Hood or Goldilocks, check whether the picture you remember are the ones pictured here or the ones in series 606d.
All copies of this book printed before 1965 were originally issued with a dustwrapper.
This copy has matt boards. It’s a fair copy of a hard-to-find book. It would serve only as a reading copy rather than to adorn the shelves of a collector. The back cover shows extra wear as does the spine and there back endpapers are grubby and a bit rippled. There are a number of pen marks on the title page too – and these show through on to the first text page. The rest of the contents pages, though, are in good condition. It dates to the mid-1970s and has the original price of 30p on the back.
