Snow White and Rose Red, 1969, 606d

Snow White and Rose Red, 1969.  This book, illustrated by Eric Winter, was the 17th book in the original series of 27 Well-Loved Tales books.  The text, as always in the books of this series, was written by Vera Southgate.

With illustrations by Eric Winter.  This is many people’s favourite book from childhood, although people seem to have been very troubled by the angry dwarf who is the villain of the piece.  Reading the book as an adult, it’s a particularly odd tale – what was that angel all about?  I’ve noticed over the years that fans of the books seem to be either team-Rose Red or team-Snow White – and this choice seems to be dictated by the reader’s hair colour.

This copy:

Snow White and Rose Red, matt boards but home-laminated in in clear plastic, Illustrated by Eric Winter.  A very good copy of a well loved book except for the fact that it has been covered in clear plastic.  An inscription has been carefully tip-exed out on the front endpapers – but this isn’t too visible.  This copy dates to the 1970s and has the original price of 24p on the back.
