The Farm, 1958, (DJ)

£14.00

The Farm  is the second in the ‘Learning to Read’ series, 563.   As with the other books in this series, it was written by educationalist Margaret Gagg.  Unusually, it was illustrated by the celebrated nature artist C F Tunnicliffe.  Many people remember Tunnicliffe’s 4 Seasons books – the ‘What to Look for’ suite.  However, not many people know that Tunnicliffe illustrated 5 books for Ladybird, not 4, and this one was the first of them.

Intended as a very first book in the long journey towards reading, the text is written in big, clear type – very simple and very repetitive.  To match the style, Tunnicliffe adapts his illustrations to appeal more to a very young child.  His illustrations in this book resemble those that he produced for Treasure Magazine – also intended for very young readers.

This copy still has its original dustwrapper (not price-clipped) in very good condition.  There are some light marks and a bit of creasing/wear at edges.  It’s now protected in a removeabe DJ sleeve.  The endpapers are white and the logo has closed wings.   The book is in good condition.  There’s a dot on the cover, a name on the endpapers and the odd light mark (foxing?) especially on the preliminary pages.
