The Farm, 1958, (matt)

£6.00

The Farm  is the second in the ‘Learning to Read’ series, 563.   As with the other books in this series, it was written by educationalist Margaret Gagg.  Unusually, it was illustrated by the celebrated nature artist C F Tunnicliffe.  Many people remember Tunnicliffe’s 4 Seasons books – the ‘What to Look for’ suite.  However, not many people know that Tunnicliffe illustrated 5 books for Ladybird, not 4, and this one was the first of them.

Intended as a very first book in the long journey towards reading, the text is written in big, clear type – very simple and very repetitive.  To match the style, Tunnicliffe adapts his illustrations to appeal more to a very young child.  His illustrations in this book resemble those that he produced for Treasure Magazine – also intended for very young readers.

In common with all the books in series 563, The Farm was originally issued with a dustwrapper.

This matt copy is in very good condition inside and out.  It’s not easy to find this one in good shape because it was intended for younger readers than the other four Tunnicliffe books and so tends to get ‘well-loved’.  This one has no more than average wear and nice, clean pages.  This copy dates to the early-1970s and has the original price of 15p on the back.
