South American Mammals , Series 691.
This is the first book in the Animals of the World series, 691. It was both written and beautifully illustrated by John Leigh-Pemberton. There were 7 books in the series, covering the mammals of the main continents and then with an additional volume ‘Air and Sea Mammals’. The artwork and research in these books is superb – probably Leigh-Pemberton’s tour-de-force for Ladybird. Sadly, it’s not a well-known series today and so goes rather unappreciated.
This matt copy is in good condition. As you can see in the photo, there are a lot of scrapes and scratces to the boards – the back cover and in particular. Inside the pages are reasonable. There’s a name on the endpapers but the reading pages are generally clean. It dates to the late-1960s, has a tally number of 240 and I believe it to be a first edition.
