African Mammals, 1969, Series 691

£5.50

South American Mammals ,  Series 691.

This is the first book in the Animals of the World series, 691. It was both written and beautifully illustrated by John Leigh-Pemberton.   There were 7 books in the series, covering the mammals of the main continents and then with an additional volume ‘Air and Sea Mammals’.  The artwork and research in these books is superb – probably Leigh-Pemberton’s tour-de-force for Ladybird.  Sadly, it’s not a well-known series today and so goes rather unappreciated.

This copy:

This matt copy is in good condition externally and VG inside.  There is some wear to the boards and spine and some pen marks on the front logo (see picture).  Inside there is a child’s name to the free endpaper but otherwise the pages are nice and clean.   It dates to the late-1960s, has a tally number of 240 and I believe it to be a first edition.
