Cocky the Lazy Rooster is the penultimate title in the ‘Animal Stories’ series, 497. As with the other books in this series, it was written by Noel Barr and illustrated by Percy Hickling.
This is a storybook intended to be read to young children. Most of the stories deal with ‘naughty’ animals and the lessons they learn by the end of the book. The wonderfully named Cocky is no exception; the eponymous hero learns his place in the farmyard – and that no one is indispensable. However the ending – as ever – is happy. The earliest copies of this book were originally published with a dustwrapper – but because it was in print for a short time it’s the hardest of this series to find in any condition.
This copy has lost its original dustwrapper and has a red line drawing on the front (the first edition has a colour picture – but they are particularly rare) and grey-brown endpapers. The boards are in good shape but for some dents (probably tooth marks) at the corners and there’s a pen mark on the back. Sadly the pen marks continue inside: there’s a neat inscription on the free endpaper and some more on the second text page (see photos). The rest of the pages are OK. This copy dates from the late 1950s.
