There were 36 book in total in the Key Words reading scheme – the Peter and Jane books. Each of 12 levels was divided into three: a, b and c. The ‘a’ books introduced new vocabularly which was reinforced in the ‘b’ books while the ‘c’ books tended to focus on writing, spelling and phonics. Book 4a was first published in 1964. It was written by William Murray and illustrated by Harry Wingfield. It was later revised with updated artwork by the same artist.
This matt copy is the first revision of the original version – the ‘transition’ version. It is called that because it has elements of the original 1964 book and the later 1970s version. The format is the original – with a full page cover picture and inside the format with text on the left and a full-page image on the right. However, the artwork is Harry Wingfield’s revised artwork – mother and Jane can wear trousers and the world gets a bit more untidy and frankly realistic. This copy is in good condition with quite a lot of wear to the spine but otherwise in good shape, with nice, clean pages. This copy dates to the 1970s has the original price of 18p on the back.
