Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs, 1969. This book, illustrated by Eric Winter, was the 19th book in the original series of 27 Well-Loved Tales books – but it stayed in print for the longest. The text, as always in the books of this series, was written by Vera Southgate.
Winter does an excellent job of blending the expectations of a child who has seen the Disney version with a brand new interpretation with vivid, lifelike illustrations. The picture of Snow White’s mother, the first queen, sewing at her window and pricking her finger is an image that has always stayed with me. I suspect the queen was modelled on stills of the actress Olivia de Havilland.

I’ve described this book as ‘scruffy’ but there are actually only two significant faults and these can be seen in the photos: some pen marks on the cover and a brown stain on the spine. There’s also some rubbing to corners. Inside there’s a name to the front free endpaper but otherwise the pages are in very good, clean condition. This copy dates to the 1970s and has the original price of 15p on the back.
