Part set of ‘Peter and Jane’ books (1970s versions)

£15.00

Fifteen books from the 1970s/80s version of the Key Words Peter and Jane reading series books, written by William Murray and illustrated by Harry Wingfield and Martin Aitchison.

The original series was first published in 1964.  However, almost as soon as they appeared in print they were criticised for being old-fashioned in their depictions of the world, so work soon began on re-illustrating them to display a society with more ethnic diversity and less restrictive gender roles.  Other changes were introduced to tally with evolving ideas about keeping children safe and avoiding unsupervised play – especially near water.  These are the revised version of the books – and the illustrations date from the 1970s.

This bundle of books contains the first 10 books in the series (but excludes the ‘c’ books – which focused on spelling and phonices).

They are all in good to excellent condition and have glossy boards except for book 5b which has the earlier matt boards.  Most have a price on the back of either 90p or 99p so they were probably printed in the 1980s.
