The Sleepy Water Vole, 1955 (DJ)

The Sleepy Water Vole is the last of the ‘Animal Stories’ series, 497.   As with the other books in this series, it was written by Noel Barr and illustrated by Percy Hickling.

This is a storybook intended to be read to young children.  Most of the stories deal with ‘naughty’ animals and the lessons they learn by the end of the book.  The Sleepy Water Vole is no exception; it features Squidgy (more formally known as Mr Water Vole) who learns that laziness risks the well-being of his family and only rises to his water vole duties after narrowly avoiding disaster.  This book is harder to find than most books in the series because it was no longer printed after the mid-1960s.  This means that any copy you find will either have (or will originally have had) a dj.

This  copy still has its original dustwrapper,  not price-clipped, which is in Good condition.    A 2-inch closed tear top of front  panel, and some light rippling on back panel.  DJ clean and not much edge wear. Inside it’s in VG condition but for the back white endpapers and back DJ flap which have some light pen marks (see photos).  This copy dates to the 1960s.
