What on Earth are We Doing? Series 727, 1976. Written by Douglas Keen and G E Simmons. Illustrated by Pat Oakley.
This is the 3rd book in the Conservation series, 727 and the first book in the series to feature a very different illustration and cover style. It was one of only two books to be written (or co-written) by Ladybird’s editorial director Douglas Keen. It was stylishly illustrated by Pat Oakley. These books were, in many ways, ahead of their time with their focus on the dangers of neglecting our environment. This was a topic close to the heart of Editorial Director Douglas Keen. It is no coincidence that these books, filled with warnings about the need to take action on the environment, came out at the time of his retirement. He was determined that this message should be emphasised before he left.
