There were 36 book in total in the Key Words reading scheme – the Peter and Jane books. Each of 12 levels was divided into three: a, b and c. The ‘a’ books introduced new vocabularly which was reinforced in the ‘b’ books while the ‘c’ books tended to focus on writing, spelling and phonics. Book 3a was first published in 1964 and revised in 1972. It was written by William Murray and the revised version was illustrated by Martin Aitchison (the original book 5a was illustrated by John Berry).
This matt copy is the original 1964 version, with a full page cover picture and inside the format with text on the left and a full-page image on the right. The artwork is by John Berry, who only illustrated a couple of Peter and Jane books and was only drafted in when Harry Wingfield and Martin Aitchison were too busy. It’s a bit harder to find in this version.
This copy:
The book is pretty worn externally with rubbing and bumping and general wear to the corners and edges but inside it is VG with nice, clean pages. This is quite a hard title to find in this version. It dates from the 1960s and has the original price of 2/6 on the back.
